I am a passionate public health advocate with a background both hard sciences and the arts, working with great concern for both the human population and the environment. I am looking to use both my analytical skills and creative thinking to build effective policy and interventions that minimize and mitigate unvoluntary toxic exposures so people may live productive and fruitful lives. I have experience from the laboratory to the community and hope to continue to find ways to bridge these worlds moving forward after my degree.

PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERIENCE

Graduate Researcher

Superfund Research Program, Mailman School of Public Health, New York, NY
June 2018 – Present
I am continuing my first epidemiological research project that started as my practicum experience after my first year in graduate school. It is an analysis of low levels of arsenic exposure and subclinical outcomes of cardiovascular disease in the MESA cohort. I am working with Dr. Ana Navas-Acien (primary investigator) and Dr. Tiffany Sanchez (post-doc).

Community Outreach and Translation

Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health & WE ACT, New York, NY
February 2018 – Present
I have been working to create an infographic for community members in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx on the topic of heating oil, air pollution, and health in response to NYC policy change. It is still in progress, but will soon be translated into Spanish for the targeted community. I synthesized scientific and policy information from grants, papers, and online government sources and interpreted as appropriate for the document. The map included was adapted in QGIS with relevant statistics and manipulated for clearer interpretation.

GIS for Public Health

Poster presentation for class at Mailman School of Public Health
Spring 2018
Final project for class collaborating with Dr. Ana Navas-Acien in the EHS department looking at the spatial correlation of arsenic and uranium present in well water from Native Lands in North and South Dakota.
